Housing nearby the city centre
Back Bay faces Charles River on the north and is surrounded by the neighbourhoods of Fenway/ Kenmore and the Boston Public Garden. It’s pretty close to the city centre.
Residential neighbourhood of architectural contrasts
It’s a mixture of residential districts inhabited by students and commercial districts, being the main shopping area of the city. It hosts from big store chains to small designer stores. This is also quite a tourist area because it contains some of Boston’s most important architectural sights. Plus, it has a very interesting history because 150 years ago the whole area was submerged in swampland.
Upscale restaurants and affordable bars
Back Bay is the trendiest neighbourhood for students in Boston, so it has a lot of genuine cool restaurants that serve different types of cuisine: Italian, French, Mediterranean, American, Asian…Some of them are exclusive places with high-priced menus, although it’s also possible to find bars to suit a student budget.
Quiet nightlife in this neighbourhood in Boston
The nightlife suits an upscale public, so if you are into fancy drinks and exclusive clubs this is your area! Compared to other areas, nightlife is quieter here. This is the perfect area for students who are looking for tranquility during the night. Back Bay has a great location, which allows you to go out in other neighbourhoods such as Allston or Fenway.
Back Bay neighbourhood’s facilities
Due to the high rent of this area, there are not many large supermarkets but you can find many small convenience stores around. Although there are some stores that sell every-day affordable products, there are also some with a more unique and expensive offer. I would recommend you to have a look at the prices before jumping in the deep!
In terms of larger supermarkets, there is a huge store from the chain Shaw’s. During the summer there is also a big farmer’s market selling fresh fruit and vegetables at Copley Square.
Newbury Street is a shopping destination in Boston, where you may find international and local stores. If you prefer shopping malls, head to The Shops at Prudential Centre or to Copley Place, where the most exclusive boutiques are located.
Since Back Bay is the trendiest zone of the city it also follows the most fashionable fitness techniques. So if you like to be up to date with the most innovative praxis you can join one of its gyms! Yoga and Pilates are also quite popular in this area. During the summer some of the Yoga centres organize outdoors activities.
If you are into cycling this area has a good cycling club. Finally, if you are a runner you can walk to Boston Common and find there the perfect training area!
Boston Common is located on the East Side of Back Bay. This park is the oldest one in the U.S. so it has a very interesting history. It has an extension of 50 acres and it’s surrounded by the Emerald Necklace, a system of connected parks. Apart from this park, Back Bay doesn’t have any other green areas.
Cultural offer and attractions
Back Bay has a beautiful architecture, which combined with its nice shops and cafés make it a very nice area to walk around. It also offers many music bars and theatre options.
Plus, some of the most emblematic buildings of the city are located here, for instance the Public Library and Trinity Church. The 2 tallest buildings of the city, the Prudential Centre and the John Hancock Tower, are located in this neighbourhood in Boston.
